Rites of Passage and Ceremonies

At First Unitarian we mark the stages of life by sharing our joys and sorrows, supporting one another through difficulty and success. From birth to death, we help one another live with deeper gratitude, greater connection, and more reverence for life.

Baby/Child Dedications
Baby Dedication

We welcome infants and children into our congregation with a special Dedication Ceremony. Parents and other family members are asked to commit themselves to raising the child and the congregation is asked to support them in this endeavor.  Private ceremonies may also be arranged.

Coming of Age

Recongnizing that youth in the 8th and 9th grade have reached an emotional and cognitive maturity, we ask them to participate in a year long study about Coming of Age.  During this

year, they meet with a mentor to develop, challenge, and articulate what their values are and what guides them through life.  At the end of the year, they are honored during the Coming of Age ceremony and each participant presents their Affirmation Statement to the congregation.

Bridging Ceremony

High School seniors are honored as they move into their adult life.  They often receive a rose with the thorns still on it.  Infants and children receive a rose in their dedications with the thorns removed - symbolizing the attempt of their caregivers to make their childhood as smooth as possible.  By leaving the thorns on for high schoolers, we are recognizing that their relationship to the world is changing and that they will be assuming more responsibility.

Wedding Ceremonies
Vaughn Wedding

Weddings are crafted to reflect the personalities, beliefs and values of each couple.  The minister works closely with the couple to create a ceremony that will honor their love for one another in a joyful and meaningful manner.  We honor all who want to make the vow of marriage. LGBTQ couples are welcome to exchange vows in this church.

Memorial Services

Services to honor loved ones who have passed are often very personal occasions. The minister works closely with the family of the deceased to create a memorial that honors the deceased, gives space for the joy that they brought to others, and acknowledges the grief of friends and family.  Often times, members and friends will scatter the cremains of the deceased in our Memorial Garden.
