Freedom School Volunteer Readers

Sign-ups are now open for volunteering to read aloud to the scholars at Freedom School at First Unitarian this summer.

As a guest reader, you will have the opportunity to be introduced to our scholars, sharing information about your role in the community. The read-aloud session is a brief yet impactful 10-minute segment during our Harambee gathering, starting at 8:30 am. We kindly request that you arrive by 8:20 am to prepare for the session, with the full Harambee ending at 9 am.

While the read-aloud time exposes scholars to our site library and favorite books, it also allows community members like yourself to witness the significance of the CDF Freedom Schools program and reinforces the importance of reading for everyone. We ask community members to come and read to our scholars and then stay for the full Harambee experience, where you can observe and engage with our scholars as they begin their day with energy and enthusiasm.

You can sign up for 1 or more dates at this link: First Unitarian Church (St. Louis City)

The director will follow up with you to see if you would like to bring your own children's book or if you would prefer us to provide one for the read-aloud session.
