Stewardship

First Unitarian Church has a long and rich tradition of stewardship. Our legacy begins with William Greenleaf Eliot, our first minister, who founded key St. Louis institutions such as Washington University, the Art Museum, the St. Louis Public Schools, Mary Institute, and the Mission Free School. Early in the 20th century, its women members founded the South Side Day Nursery to address the employment and daycare needs of low-income families. There are many accomplishments of which we are proud.

This tradition continues today through the leadership, skills, efforts, and financial commitment of our members and friends. It is expressed in a variety of ways, including the following.

  • A vigorous group of leaders. More than 25% of First Unitarian Church members are identified as leaders actively involved through committee work and/or volunteer roles within the church to enrich our church and St. Louis community.
  • Financial donations to the community. Once each month, plus additionally on Christmas Eve, special collection proceeds are donated to recipient groups selected by First Church's Social Responsibility committee. More than $15,000 annually is awarded to organizations whose work in some way supports the needs of children and low-income, disenfranchised families.
  • A dedicated endowment. The Community Action Endowment Fund (CAEF) annually awards grants to non-profit organizations whose work exemplifies our mission and values. For the 2007-2008 church year, a total of 11 grants representing $4000 in donations were awarded.
  • Ongoing member and friend donations of time and skills. First Church's Social Responsibility brochure ("We Volunteer!") identifies 16 church groups focused on improving our St. Louis community, acting for social justice, and advocating for the needs of special groups such as children, the poor, the elderly and infirm.
  • An annual canvass. Each year, members and friends reflect on the meaning First Church has in their lives and commit financially to its support. Our pledges account for over 85% of our operating budget and are essential to our operation.
  • Efforts on behalf of Unitarian Universalist growth. First Church has supported new congregational growth in St. Louis as well as in the Midwest through our ongoing participation in the Chalice Lighter program. We also have a very active partner church program and support the church in Csokfalva in Transylvania.
  • Planned giving. Individuals elect to recognize First Unitarian Church in their estate planning by designating it as a beneficiary of their estate upon their death. Individual consultation regarding planned giving is available from a member of the Planned Giving committee.

The Stewardship Committee of First Unitarian Church is a Board-appointed committee and has as its goals promoting stewardship as a value, communicating opportunities for stewardship and the most effective tools to accomplish this goal, and coordinating giving-related activities.

You are encouraged to contact Rosemary at if you have any questions or would like to discuss any aspect of stewardship at First Church.
