Horizon of Hope: Canvass 2009-2010

On February 15, we kicked off our three-week long canvass in Church and with a brunch in Fellowship Hall.

The annual canvass is an opportunity for reflection and recommitment to First Church and our Unitarian Universalist way of believing.

As Unitarian Universalists, we follow our personal paths to what we must believe. At First Church, we come together as a community to worship and serve together, and to celebrate life and its gifts. Our time, talents, and importantly, our money, are needed to bring our beliefs to bear.

Our canvass this year communicates the Horizon of Hope that our church will proceed into the future with an attitude of forgiveness and peaceful coexistence and a commitment that our faith can and will make a difference within the walls of our church and to the greater community.

Canvass materials, including pledge cards, have been mailed. They will also be available in the Dodson Room on February 22 and March 1. Pledge cards may be placed in the canvass collection basket in Fellowship Hall or they can be returned by mail. The canvass this year will conclude on Celebration Sunday, March 8.

SSDN to honor St. Louis Unitarian Foundation for Children

SSDN, formerly known as South Side Day Nursery, was founded over 120 years ago by 15 Unitarian women committed to ending poverty by working for social and economic justice through a day nursery and employment agency. Today, the organization offers a seamless connection of earlycare and education services.

First Unitarian Church and SSDN have enjoyed an ongoing relationship to this day, with many members serving as volunteers and SSDN board members throughout the years.

SSDN will hold its 2nd Annual Champions for Children awards dinner and auction on Saturday, April 4, 2009. As part of the evening’s festivities, two organizations and one individual will be honored for their exemplary support to children. We are proud to announce that the St. Louis Unitarian Foundation for Children, a long-time supporter of SSDN, will be an award recipient this year.
